Helping grassroots basketball

Across Aotearoa, fewer people were stepping up to coach grassroots basketball teams. Many parents, caregivers, and guardians felt that unless they'd played at a high level or understood every rule of the game, they weren't qualified to lead. At the same time, people simply didn't know that CoachMate — a user-friendly, online coaching platform — existed as a free resource to help them every step of the way.
Working alongside parents of players and the team at Basketball New Zealand and BNZ, we set out to take away the pressure and replace it with confidence. The future of the game doesn't rely on finding more elite coaches. It relies on more adults feeling able to say yes.
The truth is… kids don’t need a tactical mastermind. They need someone who turns up. Someone to roll out the balls, tie the loose shoelaces, celebrate the small wins and make sure everyone gets a chance to play. The resources were all there. CoachMate already had the tips, skills and drills parents needed. What people needed most was license to believe they were enough. That became the heart of the campaign: All they need is you.
So, that’s the story we told. By driving that insight throughout our creative approach, we crafted a suite of material that called out exactly who it was for and what they needed. Our priority version read “Take a shot at coaching! All they need is you,” supported by caption copy across social delivery that further worked to capture the audience. Plus, producing this work with the client and within the community that could be impacted by this mahi made it extra special.
The result was work that reflected grassroots basketball as it really is. By telling the stories of communities, through their eyes, and in a way that genuinely captured their loved experience. Honest, joyful, and full of people simply doing their best. And by celebrating presence over perfection, we helped more parents see themselves as capable coaches and reminded communities that the biggest impact often comes from simply showing up.
