From swimming pools to summit peaks — paint us a picture of how you landed here!
Kia ora, I’m Molly! I was born in Christchurch, grew up in Queenstown and moved to Dunedin for my final two years of school. Around four years ago I crossed the strait to attend Victoria University of Wellington and study a Bachelor of Communications… and I’m still here!
I have a twin sister and an older sister who ingrained in me early on that anything can be turned into a competition. They’re my best friends, and we did everything together. But whether I was playing badminton over our neighbours' washing line or competing at a national level for swimming, I liked to compete. I swam for around 10 years, played netball, snowboarded, danced and tried my hand at many, many, many different sports. My swim coach would often sit me down and tell me to quit my other sports so I could spend more time at the pool and have less chance of getting injured doing something “stupid”. I spent a lot of weekends with my mum at swim meets, or watching my sisters compete in their sports. If we had a rare free weekend, it was usually spent camping, tramping, kayaking or dad dragging us around to do something that could’ve ended badly.
Where you would find Molly growing up - in the pool or up a mountain.
So, tell us, where’s your happy place outside of the office?
Like most people I enjoy doing things that make me happy. I’m in my netball era at the moment, playing club netball on Saturdays for SMOG and watching every ANZ Premiership game. I have grown out of my hatred of running and now enjoy a jog along Oriental Parade or a swim at Freyberg. I don’t go nearly as much as I should, though. I’m also learning to sew and will always have a book on the go. It’s usually one Zol recommends (he has great book recommendations). But more than all of this, I like spending time with my friends and family.
If someone close to you had to describe you in three words, what would they say?
Will eat biscuits.
Be honest, what makes working at Hemisphere so special?
I think everyone has said this, but the thing I love the most is that I’m working with my mates. I love getting roasted by Zol, hearing Kris, Sean and Steve try and out-pun each other, Katrina and Aaron knowing the answer to pretty much any Stuff quiz question, and Kokoro dancing around the fact he won every race at his swim meet. Watching Jack falling for scammers impersonating Tim was good too. I could go on and on, but it’s just special to be part of a place filled with such inspiring, talented and caring people.
Which project has made you think 'this is why I got into this game'?
I like all the projects I work on, so it’s hard to pick a favourite. From Black Diamond Technologies and Bird Flu, to Breastfeeding, there’s a lot of different and cool things that keep me busy day to day.
I don’t know if this classifies as a project but learning and understanding all about how the advertising industry works has been awesome (much of this is thanks to the best boss in the world, Katrina).
Is there a phrase that has basically become your trademark around here?
“I can’t, I’ve got netball.”
